Influence of environment factors on bacterial ingestion rate of the deposit-feeder Hydrobia ulvae and comparison with meiofauna ArchiMer
Pascal, Pierre-yves; Dupuy, C; Richard, P; Haubois, A.g.; Niquil, N.
Deposit feeders are able to process a considerable volume of sediment, containing large quantities of associated bacteria. However, conclusions concerning the trophic role played by benthic bacteria in marine sediments are still not fully elucidated. This study deals with bacterivory by the gastropod Hydrobia ulvae, one of the most abundant deposit-feeding species in intertidal mudflats in Western Europe. Ingestion rates of bacteria were determined during grazing experiments using 15N preenriched bacteria. Grazing experiments were performed in order to measure effects of abiotic (temperature, salinity and luminosity) and biotic (bacterial and algal abundances) factors on ingestion rates of bacteria by H. ulvae of an intertidal mudflat (Brouage,...

Influence of phytoplankton diet mixtures on microalgae consumption, larval development and settlement of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) ArchiMer
Rico Villa, Benjamin; Le Coz, Jean-rene; Mingant, Christian; Robert, Rene.
Microalgae commonly used as feed for bivalves, Pavlova lutheri (P), Isochrisis affinis galbana (T) and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum (Cp), were fed to Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas to assess their nutritional value for larval development and metamorphosis during two experiments. Monospecific, bispecific and trispecific diets were firstly evaluated during 3 weeks from D larvae to young postlarvae. Then bispecific diets, based on different T and Cp proportions, were assessed during a similar period. Concurrently, ingestion was studied through the whole larval and postlarval development for each diet and/or diet mixture. Because lipids are assumed to be a key nutrient for bivalves, biochemical analysis was undertaken on the second set of trials...

Campana, Ludmila Lacerda; Modesto, Elisa Cristina; Barros, Ana Carolina Carvalho de; Zanella, Pablo Gilliardi; Carvalho, Carlos Augusto Brandão de; Camargo Filho, Sérgio Traballi.
The ingestive behavior of crossbred heifers grazing on stargrass pasture was managed at two levels of light interception and two levels of post-grazing residual height. The experiment was conducted at Pesagro (Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro State) between April 2012 and January 2013. The grazing (GT), rumination (RT) and idling (IT) times were evaluated every 10 minutes throughout a 24-hour period. Forage samples were collected for the analysis of chemical composition and for leaf:stem ratio determination. Dry bulb, wet bulb and black globe temperatures were evaluated every hour along with the relative humidity, during grazing to characterize the environment and calculate the Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI). The mean grazing time (6 hours) was inversely...

Ingestive behavior of steers on pastures of Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Zanine,Anderson de M; Vieira,Bruno R; Ferreira,Daniele de J; Vieira,Antônio J. M; Silveira,Márcia C. T. da; Siva,Wilton L. da; Cecon,Paulo R.
An experiment was carried out to assess the performance of steers on Brachiaria brizantha and Cynodon dactylon cv. Coast cross pastures by the continuous stocking method with a variable stocking rate. A completely randomized experimental design was used with two pastures representing the treatments, each containing 10 replicates. The results of t-tests demonstrated that the steers grazed for less time (7:19 h) on the B. brizantha grass pasture than the on Coast-cross grass pasture (8:13 h). There was no difference in rumination time from 6:46 and 6:89 h for the B. brizantha and Coast-cross pastures, respectively. There was a significant difference for the values regarding the time that the steers remained idle, and the animals were more frequently idle on...

Interpretation of particle spectra of electronic counters by microscopical methods OMA
Bakker, C.; Prins, T.C.; Tackx, M.L.M..
1. Using monocultures or single species dominated natural phytoplankton, cell counts and volume estimations obtained by visual and electronic methods show reasonable agreement.Calibration seems possible (Figs.1-2).2. Further examples given (Fig. 3-4) show that microscopical identification of the volume peaks in electronic counter spectra of natural seston is not quite simple. Phytoplankton peaks may not be detected in the Counter spectrum. Shifts of Counter peaks to the left side of the visual spectrum may be found when cylindrical, elongated or needle- like phytoplankton dominate the sample.3. Both visual and electronic methods include potentially large errors. Possibly particle volume is either overestimated by the microscope and / or underestimated by...

Investment Analysis of Alternative Dairy Systems under MILC AgEcon
Eberle, Phillip R.; Moody, Darren E.; Rendleman, C. Matthew; Peterson, William C..
Three dairy systems, 120-cow grazing, 120-cow conventional, and 600-cow concentrated, were evaluated by internal rate of return (IRR) accounting for the Milk Income Loss Contract (MILC). With MILC, the grazing and conventional systems had higher IRRs. Without MILC, the 600-cow dairy had the highest IRR. Results were sensitive to assumptions.

Kenyan pastoralist societies in transition: varying perceptions of the value of ecosystem services Ecology and Society
Kaye-Zwiebel, Eva; Resource Development Associates; evainkenya@gmail.com; King, Elizabeth; Odum School of Ecology and Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources, University of Georgia; egking@uga.edu.
In the drylands of northern Kenya, as elsewhere in Africa, traditional pastoralist social-ecological systems are undergoing profound transformations. Diminishing resource availability, changing social values and governance systems, and new resource management institutions challenge the capacity of communities for effective common pool resource management. Individuals’ values and environmental perceptions play a substantial role in decision making regarding resource use and management. Additionally, social capital within communities can influence cooperative and adaptive resource management. We studied five Laikipia Maasai communities in Kenya, which share a common natural environment, history, and political organization. We surveyed...

Methods of Change and Financial Performance of Dairy Farms Before and After a Switch to Management Intensive Grazing AgEcon
Taylor, Philip Eugene.
Interest in Management Intensive Grazing (MIG) of dairy cattle has increased during the last 2 decades. Most dairy producers utilizing MIG were former confinement or non-intensive pasture operations while the others started their operation with MIG. While research publications tout the financial and other benefits of MIG, often comparing them to non-MIG dairies, and anecdotal evidence in popular farm press has shown MIG in a favorable light, comparing a MIG dairy farm to itself before and after the management switch has not been a subject of research scrutiny. Knowing the potential impact of a switch to MIG prior to making a management decision to do so would be a significant piece of information for a dairy farm to understand if contemplating such a...

Método para estimar o tamponamento nutricional para vacas de corte em sistemas pastoris. Infoteca-e
BARIONI, L. G.; MARTHA JÚNIOR, G. B..
Planning forage needs in beef cattle enterprises is necessary for efficient utilization of genetic and environmental resources in pastoral systems and to generate economic benefits in an environmentally sound way. Production risk evaluation is essential in feed planning for cow-calf operations in pastoral systems. The proposed method to accomplish with production risk in these systems is based on the time biological system is maintained in an acceptable state under adverse climate conditions. This is coined "buffering time". The buffering time is calculated for both animals and pasture using an energetic approach. For cows, the buffering time is the minimum period the animal takes to reach the lowest acceptable body weight. for pasture, it is period for...

Models for estimating feed intake in small ruminants R. Bras. Zootec.
Pulina,Giuseppe; Avondo,Marcella; Molle,Giovanni; Francesconi,Ana Helena Dias; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao; Cannas,Antonello.
This review deals with the most relevant limits and developments of the modeling of intake of sheep and goats reared intensively and extensively. Because small ruminants are normally fed ad libitum, voluntary feed intake is crucial in feeding tactics and strategies aimed at optimal animal production. The effects of genetic, neuroendocrine, hormonal, feed and environmental factors on voluntary feed intake were discussed. Then, several mathematical models to estimate dry matter intake (DMI) were examined, with emphasis on empirical models for sheep and goats in intensive farm systems or in extensive areas under pasture or rangeland conditions. A sensitivity analysis of four models of prediction of DMI in housed lactating dairy sheep and meat sheep breeds was...

Morphogenesis in pastures with Tanzania grass fertilized with nitrogen doses under a grazing system Animal Sciences
Soares Filho, Cecilio Viega; Cecato, Ulysses; Ribeiro, Ossival Lolato; Roma, Claudio Fabrício da Cruz; Beloni, Tatiane.
The morphogenetic and structural characteristics, coupled to forage production of Tanzania grass with nitrogen (N) doses during the seasons of the year, at intermittent grazing, were analyzed. The experimental design consisted of a totally randomized block with split plots and four replications. The plots comprised 0, 150, 300 and 450 kg ha-1 N levels, whereas the sub-plots were the seasons. Urea was applied three times on the pasture and had a positive effect on the rates of leaf elongation and emergence and on the number of live leaves of Tanzania grass in the spring and summer. High nitrogen fertilization associated with shorter grazing intervals triggered a higher percentage of leaf blades in the management of Tanzania grass under rotational stocking...

Nitrogen Losses under Different Cattle Grazing Frequencies and Intensities in a Volcanic Soil of Southern Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Núñez,Pedro A.; Demanet,Rolando; Misselbrook,Tom H.; Alfaro,Marta; Mora,María de la Luz.
Chilean livestock production systems have intensified over the last years, with increasing amounts of N fertilizer inputs creating the potentiality for environmental damage through N pollution of water and air, so that alternative production strategies have been developed to reduce such environmental impacts. This study assesses N losses under different grazing frequencies and intensities on permanent pasture (Lolium perenne L., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Dactylis glomerata L., and Trifolium repens L.) on an Andisol in Southern Chile. Four grazing strategies were evaluated: frequent-heavy (FH), frequent-light (FL), infrequent-heavy (IH), infrequent-light (IL), and a no grazing control (C) treatment, and each with three replicates in a randomized complete...

Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium Losses in a Grazing System with Different Stocking Rates in a Volcanic Soil Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Alfaro,Marta; Salazar,Francisco; Iraira,Sergio; Teuber,Nolberto; Villarroel,Dagoberto; Ramírez,Luis.
In Chile there is little information on nutrient losses in livestock systems. The experiment was carried out between 2004 and 2006. Two stocking rates (3.5 and 5.0 steers ha-1) were tested under rotational grazing with Black and White Friesian steers on a permanent pasture (67.5 kg N and 40 kg P ha-1 yr-1). To quantify surface runoff losses (N, P, K), three surface lysimeters (5 x 5 m) per treatment were established. N and K leaching losses were estimated with ceramic cups. Runoff and leachate samples were individually analyzed for available and total N, reactive (RP) and total P, and K. Dissolved organic N (DON) and organic P (OP) were estimated as the difference between total and available forms. The stocking rate did not increase total N, P and K losses...

NITROGEN SOIL BUDGETS IN CONTRASTING DAIRY GRAZING SYSTEMS OF SOUTHERN CHILE, A SHORT-TERM STUDY R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Núñez,R.P; Demanet,R; Alfaro,M; Mora,M.L.
In recent years, the intensification of livestock production in Southern Chile has resulted in a high potential for environmental damage through nitrogen (N) losses, creating the need for the evaluation of N flows from these systems. The aim of the research was to determine N budgets and N use efficiency in two grazing systems in Southern Chile. For this, inputs and outputs were measured during one year on two grazing systems (heavy grazing, HG; and light grazing, LG). Also, a control treatment with no grazing (C) was considered. The annual N soil budget was determined by the difference between all N inputs (£ inputs) and all N outputs (X outputs). The results of the experiment indicate that HG treatments received the biggest N input (427, 359 and 288 kg N...
